Lower East Coast, Upper East Coast


Lower East Coast 

Overview: Situated south east of the island is the start of East Coast. The East Coast is very popular with the expats as it has easy access to CBD & Orchard within about 10 minutes, and an excellent range of property options. Most accommodation along this area is within 5 minutes to the East Coast Beach front, which is home to many sun soaked activities, beach bars and popular seafood outlets. The area is also extremely convenient for Changi airport, being within about 10 minutes drive.

Entertainment & leisure: The East Coast is an established recreational area with a whole range of outdoor, beach and water activities available. From coastal runs and walks, open water swimming, cycle paths, skate parks, wake boarding, 5-a-side pitches - the 20km stretch of coast caters for all. For a more relaxed time the area has many BBQ pits and picnic spots. Many of the country's sporting events take place at the East Coast Park area from the Singapore Marathon to the 70.3 Ironman, with the new national stadium due for completion in 2011. The area is made up of neighbourhoods, each with its own vibe and character. There is a cool laid-back bar and art vibe around Katong, with a great mix of cool boutiques, independent galleries and great local Peranakan food, notably the Katong Laksa. The colourful and well-restored buildings have made Katong a government protected area rich in Eurasian and Peranakan heritage. Heading a little further east you'll find the Malay Village an area full of Malaysian history and colour - the market sells traditional Malay art, silks and fabrics and makes for a wonderful weekend stroll. Close by is the Geylang Serai Wet Market where all manner of foodstuffs, textiles and spices are noisily bargained for. The nearby Singapore Indoor stadium hosts massive rock and pop concerts throughout the year (most recently Oasis, Coldplay to name a few) as well as many sporting events.

Upper East Coast 

Overview: Situated further up the eastern shoreline of the island is the start of Upper East Coast. The Upper East Coast is also very popular with expats as it has easy access to CBD & Orchard within about 10 Minutes. Most accommodation along this area is also within 5 minutes to the East Coast Beach front, which is home to many sun-soaked activities, beach bars and popular seafood outlets. The area is also extremely convenient for Changi airport and the ferry terminals, being within about 10 minutes drive.

Further north and away from the Coast is the Bedock Reservoir Park - a stunning location popular for wakeboarding, kayaking, fishing, running, strolling and dog walking. It's also the location for the Islands popular dragon boat racing events. Back on the beach, bars and restaurants can be found all the way along this stretch of coastline, the East Coast seafood centre has a number of terrifically tasty seafood establishments, where local favourites like the Singapore chili crab and black pepper crab get washed down with ever-flowing jugs of ice cold Tiger beer. The area of Siglap has a long stretch of quality eating and drinking outlets and many up-market food stores. Parkway Parade shopping mall, Changi Expo, Changi Museum, Changi Village, Escape Theme Park (Downtown East) are all close by. You can grab a bum boat from the jetty and explore the sleepy fishing village on the island of Pula Ubin for a glimpse of how it was in the past. Ferries to Indonesia run from the Teneh Merry ferry terminal - leave your office at 5pm on a Friday and you can be sipping a cocktail on the beach in just over an hour, watching the sunset on the beautiful Island of Bintan!
